The Serenata Singers’ 2019 concert season continued with a morning performance at Cooper House, Wheller Gardens at Chermside on 14 June. A somewhat reduced-in-size choir, lacking a conductor, still managed to put on an entertaining show, thanks in no small part to the efforts of our wonderful accompanist Prue Gibbs. For the full choir numbers, the concert program duplicated the program from our last two concerts.
For the first time in memory, all three solo performers were male choir members: Denis Joyce sang “This Nearly was Mine” from South Pacific; Ray Wiseman performed “I Believe”; and John McCollow sang “Down by the Salley Gardens”. John also served as compere for the program. Audience members enthusiastically participated in the community singing of “Over the Rainbow” and “When You Wish Upon a Star”.
Interesting fact: the choir sang “Penny Lane”; there is a laneway in Wheller Gardens named “Penny Lane”. There is no evidence, however, that Paul McCartney has ever visited.
